C-TEC Youth Services' Summer Youth Academy Prepares Excellent Entry Level Workers

"I see a remarkable difference with the Youth Academy students we hire. Summer Youth Academy students have better attitudes, passion, focus, and enthusiasm on the job than high school youths with little or no experience in the business world," exclaims Mike Biery of Benchmade Knives.

The Summer Youth Academy, part of C-TEC Youth Services, provides an opportunity for youth to receive employment training and experience. The Academy includes two weeks of training, one week of pre-employment training (First Star Boot Camp), and one week of industry-specific training. Four industry sectors were represented this year: Retail, Manufacturing, Business/Office, and Transportation & Logistics.

After completing two weeks of training and receiving a stipend check, youth are referred to local employers who offer temporary 6-week paid positions for the youth. In 2006, over 50% of youth employed through the Summer Youth Academy retained their jobs as permanent employees.
